How to Read a Gas Meter (And Why m3 to kWh Conversion Is Tricky)
Gas meters measure volume in cubic meters (m3), but your bill is calculated in kilowatt-hours (kWh). This conversion is one of the most confusing aspects of energy bills โ and it's where many billing errors hide. Let's break it down step by step.
Step 1: Read the Numbers
Find your gas meter (usually outside the building or in the basement). Look for the mechanical counter display showing numbers. Read only the black digits from left to right. Ignore any red digits โ those are decimal places.
Or just open EnergyVision, point your phone at the meter, and AI reads it in 2 seconds. No squinting required.
Step 2: The m3 to kWh Conversion
Here's where it gets complicated. Your supplier converts m3 to kWh using this formula:
kWh = m3 ร calorific value ร volume correction factor
| Factor | What It Is | Typical Value | Who Sets It |
|---|---|---|---|
| Calorific value | Energy content per m3 of gas | 9.5-11.5 kWh/m3 | Your gas supplier (varies by region) |
| Volume correction factor | Adjusts for temperature & pressure | 1.00-1.04 | Your gas supplier |
| Altitude factor | Adjustment for elevation above sea level | 0.98-1.02 | Fixed per location |
Real Example
Say your meter went from 4,521 to 4,645 m3 in one month. That's 124 m3 consumed. With a calorific value of 10.55 kWh/m3 and correction factor of 1.02:
124 m3 ร 10.55 ร 1.02 = 1,333 kWh
At EUR 0.065/kWh, that's EUR 86.65 for the month. But if your supplier uses a slightly different calorific value (say 10.2 instead of 10.55), the bill would be EUR 83.86. A 3% difference just from the conversion factor.
The calorific value changes quarterly in some countries. If your supplier uses an outdated value, you could be overpaying. It's printed on your bill โ check it against your distributor's published value.
Why EnergyVision Handles This Automatically
This is exactly why we built Smart Invoice Scan. When you photo your gas bill, EnergyVision AI:
- Extracts your actual calorific value and correction factor from the bill
- Calculates the m3 to kWh conversion automatically
- Compares with your distributor's published values
- Alerts you if the conversion seems off
- Shows your cost per m3 and per kWh side by side
No more confusing conversions. No more trusting your supplier blindly. 1 click = AI handles it all.
Types of Gas Meters
| Type | How It Looks | Common In | Reading Method |
|---|---|---|---|
| Diaphragm / Bellows | Box-shaped, mechanical counter | Residential | Read black digits left to right |
| Rotary | Cylindrical, spinning mechanism | Commercial / Industrial | Read counter display |
| Turbine | Large, with flanged connections | Industrial (high flow) | Usually has digital display |
| Ultrasonic | No moving parts, electronic | Modern installations | Digital display + data port |
Our AI is trained on all gas meter types โ diaphragm, rotary, turbine, and digital. Just point and shoot.
Stop doing gas math by hand
